Coping with Mental Illness

How Individuals Cope With Mental Illness

Mental Illness has plagued the human population for years but is finally becoming socially acceptable in society. With this newfound acceptance, medicine has greatly progressed for the better in terms of treatment options for those who are suffering from these debilitating diseases. To name a few, there are new medicinal options to help with anxiety and depression, support groups, both online and in person, in order to build relationships with those who are also struggling from the same illnesses, psychotherapy to attempt to address issues within an individual's mental mindset, and many more ("Mental Health Treatments"). It seems as though these different treatment options have been relatively successful in controlling these mental illnesses as best as possible, although they are unable to be completely cured as of now. Although there are many treatment options available, many individuals are fearful to admit they do have a mental illness and are reluctant to go out and receive proper medical treatment for the symptoms they are experiencing. This has proven to be detrimental to their mental health as they either choose to try and live with the illness without treating the problem or turning to drugs and alcohol in order to self-medicate. Many individuals attempt to "fix" the problem by abusing alcohol, marijuana, Xanax, and many other drugs which, in turn, make the mental illness significantly worse. As a result, many individuals who take this route of treatment tend to have their lives completely spiral out of control before they realize they must seek medical treatment in order to control their mental illness, but for some it is too late.
